2 moderate in summer. Snow lies for two months in winter, and
3 then such of the inhabitants as have the means emigrate to
4 Cutch Gundava.4 The soil is generally fertile, being a rich ‘Masson, Bal. Afg.
5 black loam, yielding wheat, barley, rice, lucerne, and similar sino i
6 Vegetation suited for fodder, besides madder, tobacco, and escu-
7 lent vegetables. The wildest parts of the inclosing mountains
8 are the haunts of wild sheep and goats; the more accessible
9 tracts yield ample pasture to the herds and flocks of the moun-
10 taineers. The lambs are proverbially excellent. Orchards are
11 Numerous, and produce in great perfection and abundance apples,
12 Pears, plums, peaches, apricots, grapes, mulberries, pomegranates,
13 quinces, and figs. The whole number of fixed population is
14 Supposed to be about 4,000 or 5,000, and consists of Afghans
15 and Beloaches, probably in nearly equal proportions. Besides
16 Shawl or Quetta, the chief place, the valley contains Ispunglee,
17 and a few other insignificant villages.
