16 MAMADPOOR, in Sinde, a village on the route from Sub- E.1.C. Ms. Doe,
17 zulcote to Shikarpoor, and twenty-two miles south-west of the
18 former town. The adjacent country is low, level, alluvial, over-
19 run with jungle, and containing numerous watercourses and
20 ponds, replenished during the inundation of the Indus, at which
21 time this tract is extensively flooded. Lat. 28° 10’, long.

24 on the road from Jelalabad to Kabool, and about sixty miles east joy?" A
25 of the latter place. Here the British under General Pollock, in
26 their advance on Kabool in 1842, defeated the Afghans, and
27 destroyed the fort. Lat. 34° 17’, long. 70° 4’.
28 MANASA BUL, in Kashmir, a beautiful lake, which dis-
29 charges its water into the Jailum on the right or north side. It
30 is a mile and a half long, three-quarters of a mile wide, and
31 very deep; bounded on the west by picturesque hills, while on
32 the north and east the successive ranges of the northern Kash-
33 Inirian mountains rise in great grandeur, and on the south a
34 fertile and verdant plain stretches to the Jailum. It is alto-
35 gether, according to Von Hiigel, one of the most beautiful spots 1. 350; vigne,
36 in existence. On the northern bank are the remains of a palace ““"™ "147
37 built by Nur Jehan, the celebrated Queen of Jehangir, the Mogul
38 emperor. Here the substratum of the soil is of limestone, which
39 is reduced to lime in a large kiln belonging to the government.
