20 MAROOF, in Afghanistan, is a district in the hilly country
21 north of the Kojuk Pass. Here was a fort, described by Outram! ! RoughNotes, 154;
22 as “ the strongest fortress we had yet scen in the country, being babi Aegis
23 constructed with double gates, a ditch, faussebraye, and towers of !*
24 solid masonry.” It had been evacuated by the Afghans, and the
25 British completely demolished it. This demolition took place to
26 avenge a frightful massacre perpetrated here in 1839 by the
27 Afghans, on a large body of the camp followers of the army of
28 the Indus. Above two hundred of the natives of Hindostan, who
29 had accompanied the invading force, joined a caravan proceeding
30 from Herat to the Derajat, and being treacherously induced at
31 Maroof by the Kafilabashee, or head of the caravan, to deliver up
32 their arms to his safe keeping, were, with the assistance of the |
