13 his emissaries that between twenty and thirty thousand men, the
14 finest troops of the Belooche nation, were drawn up on the banks
15 of the Fulailee in his front, and that the lapse of another day would
16 place nearly thirty thousand more in his rear and on his left flank,
17 moved forward to extricate himself from this threatening situation,
18 and gave the enemy battle, on February 17th, 1843, though his own
19 force amounted to but two thousand eight hundred men of all
20 arms, and twelve pieces of artillery. The Belooche force actually
21 on the ground amounted to twenty-two thousand men, with fifteen
22 pieces of artillery. After a close and obstinate engagement for
23 above three hours, during which those brave barbarians shewed
24 desperate valour, the right of their position was carried by the
25 Anglo-Indian cavalry, and their army totally routed, losing
26 “« artillery, ammunition, standards, and camp, with considerable
27 stores, and some treasure.”? The British lost two hundred and
28 fifty-six men killed and wounded, the enemy about five thousand.
29 Six of the principal members of the Talpoor dynasty immediately
