MUNDI, north-east of the Punjab, is a small territory, com-
prising several valleys with their inclosing ridges, on the southern
slope of the Himalaya. The capital, which is also called Mundi,
is situate at the confluence of the Sukyt river with the Beas,
which is here two hundred yards wide, very deep, and crossed by a
ferry. These rivers have, every twenty-four hours, a periodical rise
and fall, in consequence of the melting of snow by the heat of the
sun, so that they rise towards evening and continue to do so
throughout the greater part of the night, decreasing towards morn-
ing and throughout the forenoon, The Rajah’s palace is an exten-
sive building, with whitened walls, and covered with slate. It is
surrounded by a beautiful garden, containing a profusion of the
finest fruit-trees and flowers. The bazaar is large and well
stocked. Mundi seems to be peculiarly under the influence of
Hindoo superstition, and the horrible rite of suttee, or burning the
sati or widow, with the corpse of her husband, is frightfully
prevalent. When the Rajah dies, between twenty and thirty
women invariably perish in this dreadful manner, and the number
who suffer among the humbler classes is proportionate to the rank
of the departed. In the vicinity, are productive mines of iron and
salt, and the greater part of the revenue of the prince is derived
from these sources. The Rajah is tributary to the Sikhs, and
is treated with much oppression and contumely by them. Mundi
is in lat. 31° 40’, long. 76° 53’.

Ramnegurh to Ferozpoor, and seventy miles south-east of the
former town. It is situate near the right bank of the river Ravee,
twenty miles south-west of Lahore. Lat. 31° 27’, long. 74° 2’.
