1 JAIL MANAGEMENT IN MYSORE.
2 1. THERE may be said to be three Jails in the Bangalore Division,
3 two of which, called respectively the Town and Fort
4 Jail, are at Bangalore, and the third is in a moveable
5 Camp ; the convicts belonging to it being employed on the roads in the
6 District. Its present encampment is in the Umbajidroog Talook, where
7 the convicts are engaged in making a new line of road to thé Cuddapah
8 Frontier, in the direction of Muddenpilly.
9 2. The Town Jail was removed in the beginning of 1853, from its
10 former locality in a low and crowded part of the Pettah of Bangalore, to
11 the present more suitalle and airy situation near the Northerg Gate of
12 the Pettah, upon a piece of a ground which formed a part of the old
13 Boundary hedge, and was cleared for the purpose.
14 3. The Town Jail consists of three compartments, viz. :—The Felon’s
15 ail, the Debtor's Jail, and the Insane Ward, each compartment having
16 a separate entrance, The Jail is constructed of granite pillars, support-
17 ing slabs of the same material for’ the roof, with the intervals between
18 sthe pillars filled up with masonry. -As there is no timber employed in
19 the building, except for doors and windows, its cleanliness and freedom
20 from vermin are greatly ensured. It is besides well ventilated.
21 4. The Town Jail is capable of containing 400 prisoners. The num-
22 ber of its inmates on the 30th September ]855 was 246.
23 5. The cost of the whole building was Rupees 5,458-8-6, exclusive of
24 the value of the assistance rendered by the convicts themselves,
25 6. The Fort Jail was originally a temporary thatched building,
26 situated near the Mysore Gate of the Fort. It is now a permanent
27 edifice, constructed on the same principle as the Town Jail, and cost
28 Rupees 1,515-11-7.
29 7. When Thuggee was first discoyered to exist in the Mysore Terri-
30 tory, those who were convicted of it, and sentenced to long periods of
31 imprisonment, were sent to this Jail; but criminals of other descriptions
32 are now also confined in it.
33 8. The Fort Jail is capable of containing 292 prisoners, Tyg eee:
