4 30. In the Chitiledroog Division a new Jail is in progress at Toom-
5 koor, on the same plan as the one recently erected at Mysore. Hitherto
6 the convicts have for the most part been almost exclusively employed in
7 making and repairing roads, and have for the most part been under
8 canvas at a distance from the Sudder Station.
9 31. The exception has been in the case of iron-smiths, potters, car-
10 penters and intelligent individuals of other classes who have been em-
11 ployed in a work-shop under the superintendence of a Government
12 Maistry. These men have executed nearly all the wood and iron-work
13 of the travellers’ bungalows in this Division, and have been found very
14 useful in a District almost destitute of handicraftsmen,
15 32. Inthe Nuggur Division there is but one Jail at the Cusbah
16 Town of Shemogah. The system pursued is the same as in the Ban-
17 galore Division, and the Superintendent is of opinion, that the punish-
18 ment of the common convict is ample, and that there is nothing in his
19 condition to tempt the lowest of the population to subject themselves
20 to it
