The sales at Warcha show a continued falling off, owing,
it is believed, to the mine being some nine miles away from the
North-Western Railway at Gunjial station. The salt is of the
highest quality, but these nine miles of road carriage cost too
much to enable the salt to compete equally, on the one hand,
with Khewra salt, and, on the other hand, with Kalabagh salt
carried by railway. The exports therefore are chiefly by road
towards Jhung and the Jhelum-Chenab Delta. There is a good
increase in the trade in Kalabagh salt, for the transport of :
which downwards, towards Multan and Muzaflargarh, the ex-
tension of the railway to Mari has given great facilities:
Kalabagh salt, too, is of excellent quality, and is perhaps,
on the whole, the best rock salt sent into the markets. The
Nurpur mine merely supplics local wants in the immediate
neighbourhood, and the sales range only between 4,000 and
4,000 maunds per annum.
The quantity of salt warehoused for consumption within
the protected area of the salt range was maunds 19,239 in
1893-94, and maunds 18,729 during the year under review.
The quantity so dealt -with in 1892-93 amounted to maunds
18,8538 so that the use of duty-paying salt in this area is main-
tained at a steady level.
