The receipts, as explained in previous reports, consist of a
charge of 6 pies per maund on all through-traffic salt purchased
by traders. The expenditure is incurred by the department
in receiving, counting, repairing, marking, filling, weighing
and sewing up bags, and loading and consigning the des-
patches indented for. ‘The cost amounted this year to 4-63 pies
per maund of salt dealt with, being one-third ofa pie per
maund more than in 1893-94.

In fixed charges there is a decrease in outlay of Rs. 1,828,
owing to the transfer, to meet the exigencies’ of the public
service, of lower grade officers to this section of the Punjab
Mines Division. In contingent charges there is a decrease of
Rs. 506, owing to diminished expenditure on account of travel-
ling allowance, half fines rewards (less smuggling having pre-
vailed during the year), and repairs to public buildings.
The seizures effected will be described when. the penal action
of the department for the year comes under consideration.
The establishment posted on the North Hazara section of the
Preventive Line did excellent work again this year, and the
practice of smuggling Kohat salt into North Hazara has very
greatly lessened.
