able carriage having been requisitioned for the Waziristan and
Chitral expeditions, otherwise there would have been a much
larger increase.” The total charges are less by Rs. 7,729;
and the net revenue is larger by Rs. 8,200, nearly equal, that
is, to the reduced expenditure.

The Raja’s income from the mines is smaller than the SOM ih expenditure
amount received by him in 1893-94 by Rs. 4,255, and is, on the _ explained,
other hand, larger than,in 1892-93 by Ks. 3,488, so that the year
is a fairly average one for him. The,same is the case as
regards the receiptsof the British Government, which are more
than in 1892-93 by Rs. 1,341, and less than in 1893-94 by
Rs. 1,637. The expenditure by the British Government has
increased in fixed items by Rs. 1,612, and has decreased in con-
tingent items by Rs. 29, the total expenditure being Rs. 7,793
- In 1893-94 and Rs. 9,376 in 1894-95. This increased expendi-
ture has been caused by the transfer to the charge of the mines
of a Superintendent of the highest grade in lieu of one of a
lower grade, and bythe new Superintendent receiving exchange
compensation allowance, on which account the sum ot Rs, 901 ;
was paid to him in the year. The net revenue derived by the —
British Government was less than any amount received on that
account during the previous three years, owing to the larger
expenditure incurred, but was practically equal to the net. reve-
nue received in 1890-91.
. : ; ; Daty and selling prieg,
No change took place during: the year either in the duty
levied or in the selling price of the salt. The price of the salt
is ten and a-half annas a maund, all of which the Raja ‘receives,
and the duty is séven and a-half annas a maund, out of which
the British Government receives two-thirds (five annas) and
the Raja one-third (two and a-half annas). Thus out of a
total charge of one rupee and two annas a maund, the Rdja
receives 13 annas and the British Government 5 annas on each
maund of salt sold, irrespective of destination.
