traders themselves, is consumed within the same areas,
SAMBHAR.
1893-94 the quantity thus sold ainounted to maunds 26,39,380,
and in 1894-95 to maunds 38,60,363, showing an increase of
maunds 12,20,983 in the year just ended. Owing to the reduc-
tion of the price in June 1894 from eight annas to four annas
a maund, the Sambhar salt trade, regained the footing in the
markets which it possessed before 1893-94 and drove back
Didwana and Pachbadra almost, though not completely, to
their former limits. Sales differ at Sambhar, as well as in the case
of Punjab Mines rock salt, from the clearances, by the amount
of the uncleared balance awaiting removal. At the opening of
the year this uncleared balance amounted to maunds 85,686 and
at the close of the year it amounted, owing to the very heavy
sales that took place in the last month of the year, to maunds
4,67,335. Thus out of a total sale in the year of maunds
40,31,618, there were sent into the market by railway and road
maunds 36,49,969. In 1893-94 there passed into consumption
maunds 47,42,112 and in 1894-95 maunds 46,80,599 of Sambhar,
Didwana and Pachbadra duty-paying salts combined. Bara-
gara sales also show increases in 1893-94 and 1894-95 over the
sales of previous years, some portion of which is due to the rise
that occurred in the price of Sambhar salt. Salt from Calcutta
is reported to have crept higher up than usual into the eastern
districts of Oudh and the North-Western Provinces during the
scarcity of Sambhar salt.
