REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
(9) the Oudh and Rohilkand Rail-
way ; (10) the Bengal and North-Western Railway. Decreases
have occurred on five séctions or lines of railways, but the
quantities involved are all insignificant in amount and the areas
really out of the reach of Sambhar except in the case of the
Sambhar to Ajmere section of the Rajputdna-Malwa Railway
where the amount concerned is almost identically the same in
both years.
42, Open wagons continue to be supplied by the railway
authorities at their discretion for the removal of salt from the
lake. No loss or inconvenience has resulied from their use,
Rolling stock of this description is supplied for the conveyance
of salt only when covered stock is not available.
43. Details are entered in the next statement showing
the lease. the prices at which Sambhar salt has sold at the lake since
870-71. There are now no auction sales of salt held on the
lake edge, as practically the quality of the salt now manufac-
tured differs so little that is would not be possible to sell ever
the best kyar salt for an anna a maund mofe than pan or lake
salt would secure. In other words, there is now no Sambhar
salt of a low grade of quality produced. The trade would not
touch it if there were, and the time is past whea anything but
white, clean, well-grained salt can be offered to the trade. ‘hus
ever since 1885-86, no salt has been sold at a higher price than
eight annas a maund, and the price has been a fixed one, with-
out selection or preference fees. In 1894-95 only two rates pre
vailed. From the tst April to the 14th June 1894, the price
was eight annas a maund, and on the Jatter date, when it was
certain that a good crop had been stored, the price was reduced °
to four annas a maund, at which rate it still stands :-—
