SALT REVENUE DEPARTMENT FOR THE OFFICIAT, YEAR 1894-95.
do much that was nzeded to improve the salt supply they are
as a body contented. They have, as I have said, behaved well
at a time too when, had they chosen to give trouble, matters
would have been serious, They have been manageable.” This
is a very interesting account of the condition and prospects of
the Pachbadra salé source. Mr. Buckley’s management of this
troublesome, and at times perplexing charge, does him the
highest credit, and he deserves my cordial acknowledgments for
all he has done during the past two trying years.

61. In the year under report no change took place in the
strength of the establishment maintained on the Luni salt tract
for the protection of the salt revenue, and it consisted, as in
1893-94, of one inspector, three kotegushts, five jamadars, forty
peons and a medical staff of one hospital assistant, one com-
pounder, one bhistee and one sweeper. The establishment was
reorganised in 1892-93, and has now for three years proved
efficient. The fixed and contingent charges for the past two
years are :—=
1898-94, Fixed Rs. 6,299 Contingent Rs, 686 ; Total 6,985
1894-95 , 6.294; ‘i 518; » 6,807
Maunds 5,266 of free salt were issued during the year to
35,107 persons inhabiting 38 villages in the tract, at the rate of
six seers per head. The issue took place according to annual
custom, and is a gift to the inhabitants of this saliferous region
which it pays us well to continue. Only two cases of theft
and removal of salt in the tract occurred within the year, in
which five persons were involved. These persons were all sent
for trial to the Hakims of Sachore and Malani, and were all
punished. The quantity of salt concerned was 10 maunds in
1894-95, and 38 maunds in 1893-94. The tract was thoroughly
inspected by a Superintendent during the year and found to be
in good order. The Inspector in charge, Sheo Pershad, has
worked satisfactorily,
62. The next statement shows the gross realizations, the
fixed and contingent charges, and the net revenue of the
Falodi salt source tor the past four years, This source merely
remains open for the sale of duty-free salt to the Jodhpur
Darbar in order that the stock of salt in hand,‘ or as much of it
as is saleable, may becleared off. The establishment employed
consists of one inspector, one jamadar and six peons. No salt
has been made since 1891-92 :—
