which, pure or impure, saleable or unsaleable, must be got out
of saltpetre. Adding together the salt excised, destroyed, and
in bond the figures for each year in the statement are maunds
83,829 in 1891-92 ; maunds,85,999 in 1892-93 ; maunds 76,992
in 1893-94 and maunds 96,262 in 1894-95. 1f to these figures
the sitta destroyed be added, sitta being neither more nor less
than unclean and impure salt, and another inevitable bye-product
of saltpetre refinement, the result is still creditable to 1894-95.
Regarding the increasing quantity of saltpetre salt destroyed,
or left in bond at the close of the year, the Assistant Commis-
sioner of the Upper Division notices that in his division “ this
result appears to have been owing to the reduction in the price
of Sambhar and to larger quantities of Sulténpuri salt having
entered the parts of the country where saltpetre salt has the
. greatest sale. Owing to this the demand for saltpetre salt
slackened, less than usual was excised, and the stock balance
rose.’ The Assistant Commissioner of the Lower Division
brings to notice that there was less demand for, and more
difficulty in selling saltpetre salt in Calcutta this year, As
regards sitta it appears that maunds 5,971 in 1893-94, and
maunds 9,851 in 1894-95 were passed out of refineries on pay-
ment of a fee of 8 annas per maund and the cause of this excess
in the Punjab transactions has already been explained. The
remainder was destroyed. What was taken out of refineries
sold at from 12 annas to a rupee a maund and is said to have
all been properly used “for industrial purposes, principally
for curing goat skins by the wet process and for sizing country
“yarns,”
