SALT REVENUE DEPARTMENT FOR THE OFFICIAL YEAR 1894-95,
82. Mr. A. B. Patterson0.S. Commissioner of Salt Reve-
hue, was in charge of the department throughout the year.
83. I must as usual bring to, notice the admirable work of
Mr. R. J. Whitten, Deputy Commissioner ; his thorough know-
ledge of the department makes his assistance invaluable in every
branch of the administration.
All the Assistant Commissioners have done well, but I would
specially bring to notice those mentioned below :—
Mr. Lyon, Assistant Commissioner, Sambhar Division,
has managed his important charge with conspicuous ability,
and, as I have shown, with most successful results. Mr.
Buckley again deserves the greatest credit for the tact and
ability with which he has managed the difficult Pachbadra Divi-
sion, Mr. Bolster as usual managed the Punjab Mines Divi-
sion with energy and intelligence.
Among Superintendents, I would bring to notice Messrs,
Bryan and Holford. The former was selected to act for Mr. Ash-
ton as Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Upper Division,
Internal Branch, during the absence of the latter on special duty
in Bengal. His work while in charge of this important charge
deserves special acknowledgment. Afterwards, he was selected
to succeed Mr. Siddons as Personal Assistant, and he performs
the duties of this office to my entire satisfaction. Mr. Holford
acted for three months as Assistant Commissioner, Sambhar Di-
vision, during the absence of Mr. Lyon on privilege leave.
The sewere most important and critical months of the manufac-
turing season. Mr. Holford showed much energy and tact in
pushing on this work and in the management of his subordinates,
and he deserves very great credit for the successful results.
He will soon be again appointed to actasan Assistant Com-
missioner, Mr. Money, who is in special charge of the Mayo
Mines, as usual deserves commendation for the manner in
which he carried on his difficuls and responsible duties.
Rai Bahadur Nanuk Chand worked with zeal and intelli-
gence during the year in his important post as Superintendent of
salt manufacture at Sambhar. He will soon retire from the ser-
vice, There are few native officers in this rank in the ‘depart-
ment, and I have great pleasure in acknowledging the high per-
sonal character which he has always borne and the devotion to
duty which has been his characteristic during 33 years of
honorable service.
