REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
The total annual issue of salt, free both of price and duty,
authorized by the several salt agreements, ss maunds 34,710,
and the quantity actually issued during 1895-96 was maunds
34,260, as per the details given in the statement. A running
account is kept with the Durbars, so that in some years the
issues are more than, and in some years less than, the annual
allowances. Half duty salt is, as has been explained in previ-
ous reports, no longer issued to the Bikanir Durbar, which
alone enjoyed this concession. For some years back, at the
request of the Durbar, salt sold at the leased salt sources in
Rajputdna for consumption in Bikanir, up to a limit of 20,000
maunds, is issued on payment of full duty, one-half of which is
subsequently refunded by this Department tothe Durbar. This
arrangement continues to be mutually satisfactory. In the year
just ended the sales for Bikanir amounted to maunds 16,580;
on which the full duty paid realized Rs. 41,451, half of which,
or Rs. 20,726, belonged to Bikanir. Out of this sum Rs, 15,871
have been paid to the Durbar, and the remainder, Rs. 4,855, is
in course of adjustment by the Comptroller of India Treasuries.
6. The statement that follows shows the amounts annually
payable under the salt treaties and agreements to the Durbars
and Chiefs in Rajputana, Central India and the Punjab, and .
tothe Istamrardars and Jagirdars in Ajmere, and the amounts
that were paid in the year under report. The amount payable
was Rs. 30,32,089, and the payments were Rs, 29,17,014. At
the close of the year certain amounts remained unpaid to the
Udeypur, Bikanir and Tonk Durbars, which will be disbursed
