regards the two kinds of salt paying special rates of duty, the

5,91,497 in 1894-95 to maunds 7,85,470 in 1895-96, the cause
of this being the discovery by speculators, as well as by the
usual traders and carriers, that an early increase in the rate of
duty was intended by Government. Mandi sales show an
increase of maunds 8,542, or from maunds 1,28,789 in 1894-95

Jodhpur in Rajputéna, and Rémpur in Rohilkhand, are the
only two states which receive salt free of duty, but for which
the price is charged ; and the statement shows that up to the
close of the year 1895-96 Rampur had not drawn its annual
allowance of duty-free salt. The Jodhpur Durbar is entitled
by the terms of the salt agreement to receive annually maunds
2,25,000 of salt free of duty. During the year ended it drew
maunds 1,9§,139, being maunds 26,861 less than it was entitled
to. The statement shows the quantity drawn from each of the
three sources of Didwana, Pachbadra and Falodi. In connec-
tion with this isaue of duty-free salt it is satisfactory to note
that no cases came to light during the past year of salt being
conveyed across the border for sale or consumption in neigh-
bouring states.
