REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
resulted ina net excess in the heaps of 1112 per cent. The re-
sults of the two years considered together testify very credit-
ably to the way in which manufacture and storage are conduct-
ed at the lake by the Assistant Commissioner and his officers.
36. Particulars are entered in the next statement showing
the prices at which Sambhar salt has been sold at the lake since
1870-71. There was no change throughout the year under
report in the price charged for the salt, and it was all sold at the
uniform rate of 4 annas a maund; neither were there any auc-
tion sales of salt on the lake edge held during the year. Such
sales are only possible and convenient when the quality of the
salt extracted varies greatly, and this is not the case now.
Owing to the improved methods of manufacture and storage
adopted, and the greater care taken in handling the salt, its
quality is nearly all alike, and we have found that traders
will not give even an anna a maund more for fresh salt than
they pay for salt at the storage yards. During 1894-95 maunds
3,57,981 of salt were sold at 8 annas a maund before the price
was reduced to its present rate, and this raised the average in
that year to 4°36 annas per maund :—
