SALT REVENUE DEPARTMENT FOR THE OFFICIAL YEAR 1895-96,
The Assistant Commissioner says that a good deal of REVIEW BY SECTIONS.
' Calcutta salt was sent up to the markets in the north-east of SAMBHAR.
Oudh and the North-Western Provinces, while the price of salt
was cheap in the Calcutta market, and the enquiries of other offi.
cers corroborate this statement. In Réjputana Sambhar dis-
- placed Pachbadra salt to a large extent, as the business of the lat-
ter salt source fell off by some two and a half lakhs of maunds.
Tn the south-east Punjab the demand for Sambhar was good. In
the Central Provinces and Central India, Baragara salt did bet-
ter than Sambhar and Pachbadra owing, to a large extent, to
the opening of the Godhra-Rutlam branch of the Bombay,
Baroda and Central India Railway ; and necessarily the consign-
ments to Bengal were smaller than in the preceding year. In
the Central Provinces and Central India the trade in Sambhar
salt will probably continue to shrink until it becomes possible
to reduce the price now charged at the lake, and there is little
likelihood of this for some time to come.
39, The statement contained in this paragraph shows the Comparison of prices of
prices, month by month, for the past two years, of the chief ** ne
varieties of salt sold at Cawnpore, the principal salt market in
Upper India. Neither Didwana, Pachbadra, Baragara, nor
Calcutta got any footing in this market during the year, and
the competition was confined to Sambhar salt, Sultdnpuri and
rock salt from the Punjab Mines. The prices of all three des-
criptions were nearly equal at the close of the year. Owing to the
reduction of the Hakimi cess, and the low prices with which
the manufacturers were content, Sultanpuri salt was the cheapest,
but neither in it, nor in rock salt, was any really large business
done, and all the Sultanpuri salt imported was reshipped to
retail marts across the Ganges in Oudh :—
