” Westatone ta nambeevot Compared with 1894-95, refinery licenses show an increase
licenses. in number of 51, and in fees collected of Rs. 2,551; crude:
saltpetre licenses have increased by 6,772, and their fees.
by Rs. 7,137; and khari licenses by 492 and the fees
realized on them by Rs. 622. In sujji licenses there is
a decrease of 375, and in fees of Rs. 745. In russi licenses there
is an increase of 48 in the number issued, and of Rs. 86 in the
fees realized. Going further into details in connection with
the licenses issued for each substance, the following is an ana-
lysis of the subject, province by province:— (1) Panjéb.—In
1894-95, refinery licenses 41, and crude saltpetre licenses 1,526.
In 1895-96 refinery licenses 44, and crude saltpetre licenses
2,020. Increase in refineries 3, and in crude works 494, owing
chiefly to better weather for manufacture during the year. (2)
The North-West Provinces and Oudh,—In 1894-95 refineries 128,
and 154 in 1895-96; increase 26. Crude saltpetre works 6,648
in 1894-95, and 9,239 in 1895-96; increase 2,591. Khari works
845 in 1894-95 and 402 in 1895-96; increase 57. All these
increases have been caused chiefly by more favourable weather
for manufacture, (3) Patna Division.—Refineries 369 in
1894-95, and 887 in 1895-96; increase 18. Crude saltpetre
works, 37,041 in 1894-95, and 40,551 in 1895-96 ; increase
8,510. Khari 5,247 licenses in 1894-95, and 5,678 in 1895-96 ;
increase 431. All these increases too were due to the same
cause that operated in the North-Western Provinces, Oudh‘and
the Punjab. (4) Bhagulpur Division.—Refineries 20 in
1894-95, and 21 in 1895-96; increase 1. Crude saltpetre
works 1,902 in 1894-95, and 2,044 in 1895-96; increase 142,
caused in both cases as in the previous instances. In the issue
of khari licenses there was an increase of 4, which calls for
no explanation. (5) Calcutta—Here there was no difference
in the number of refinery licenses taken out. The industries
which the Internal Branch controls and supervises were every-
where in a more healthy and active condition than in 1894-95.
Prices were on the whole good, and the year, owing to its
dryness, was an extraordinarily favourable one for both refined
and crude saltpetre, and for khari manufacture.
61. This statement shows the number of refineries at
aa work in the Internal Branch and the operations conducted in
them for the past four years :-—
