REPORT ON THE ADMANISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
63. The statement that follows next shows for the whole
of the Internal Branch the quantity of saltpetre salt excised,
and of sitta and salt destyoyed during the past four years. It
also shows the quantity of salt remaining in bond, unexcised or
destroyed, at the end of each year :—

The figures in this statement are satisfactory. The chief
object of the Internal Branch is to prevent the illicit manufac-
ture of salt in licensed factories and in salt tracts, and its smug-
gling out of refineries, at the same time taking special care that
there is no unnecessary interference with the important indus-
try of saltpetre manufacture. This statement shows that the
interests of Government were well looked after in refineries.
Compared with the preceding year there was not only an
increase from maunds 55,133 to maunds 72,025 in the quantity
of salt excised ; there were also the following other increases, viz :
maunds 12,976 in the quantity of sitta destroyed ; maunds 3,928
in the quantity of salt destroyed for which no sale could be found ;
and maunds 29,675 in the quantity of salt that. remained in
bond unexcised, at the close of the year. Great attention was
also paid during the year to the other point mentioned—that is
to the avoidance of all unnecessary obstruction to saltpetre
manufacture.
Maunds 3,530 of sitta, or impure salt, were passed out on
payment of a fee of 8 annasa maund in the North-Western Prov-
inces during the year, and maunds 7,800 in the Panjab against
maunds 2,594, and 7,257, inthe North-Western Provinces and
the Panjib, respectively, in the previous year. The total
quantity in both years is comparatively insignfficant. The
substance continues to be used for the most part or industrial
purposes, but it was reported during the year that*sitta is also-
now coming into use in the neighbourhood of Agra for the
euring or salting of beef for export to Burma. This matter
is under inquiry and next year we shall possess accurate and
trustworthy information about it.
64. The following statements furnish the usual statistics of
the refined saltpetre trade, the first showing the total imports
into, and exports from, Calcutta, and the second the imports
into Calcutta by provinces. Both statements show that the
business done has considerably improved again this year :—
