maunds 18,66,527 in the previous year. The average quantity
delivered inside this area for each of the past five years is
-‘maunds 18,10,883: so that the deliveries of rock salt for
1893-94 exceed the average by maunds 17,005. The following
are the comparative figures of deliveries within this area
during the past five years :—

The salt was well distributed over the whole area of the
Punjab. The following are the markets in which important
increases of trade occurred :—Amritsar, maunds 3,813 ; Gurdas-
pur, maunds 1,363; Pathankot, 4,070 maunds. [This is an
important and satisfactory increase, as Pathankot is the railway
terminus through which the country (Kangra and Hoshiarpur)
is supplied, within which specially taxed salt from the Mandi
salt quarries is also consumed]; Jullundur, 11,247 maunds;
Phugwara, 7,228 maunds; Doraha, 3,475 maunds; Patiala,
2,170 maunds ; Kalka, 2,724 maunds ; Ghakkar, 2,856 maunds ;

2,923 maunds; Leiah, 3,013 maunds.; and Khushalgarh, 2,703.
maunds. The only decrease of any importance that occurred
was in the consignments to Khushab, a town and railway
station on the Jhelum, opposite the civil station of Shahpur,
from which the Jhang district used to be largely supplied
with salt. The trade to this town fell off during the year by
maunds 26,676, a fact which the Assistant Commissioner of the
division accounts for by the failure of some of the chief traders
of the place (bankers) who financed the salt trade of the town
of ‘Khushab with the Warcha salt depét. The deficiency was
supplied from, the Warthganj depot down the river Jhelum
direct to the Jhang district.
The direct bookings.to Kashmir are small again this year,
though somewhat larger than those of 1892-93; but it is
believed that the quantity entermng that territory is steadily
increasing, as would appear from the details for the past two.,
