1,478 in 1895.96. There was a decline in the road traffic with
the North-Western Provinces, maunds 10,197 having been
despatched in 1895-96, and only maunds 7,871 in 1896-97. Of
this last-named quantity, maunds 189 were sent to the Dehra
Dun district, and the rest to the Moradabad, Bijnor and Pilibhit
districts of Rohilkhand, where, it is said, that Sultanpuri salt
is consumed not only locally, but also in the foothills of the
Himalayas. The falling off in this trade is said to have been
owing to the scarcity of fodder in Rohtak and Gurgaon pre-
- venting the cart owners of those districts from returning to the
salt works after having taken consignments of salt into Rohil-
khand in the beginning of the latter half of the year under
report.

It will be remembered that during 1893-94 the price Of jnerense in gross realise-
Sambhar salt had to be raised to eight annas a maund in conse- _ tions and net revenue
quence of a failure of stocks, and a considerable decrease se a
resulted in sales. There can therefore be no instructive com-
parison between the figures of 1893-94 and those of the year
under report. The gross revenue of the past year falls below
that of 1894-95, but is in excess of that of 1895-96. In 1896-
97 the total realizations amounted to Rs. 1,08,13,842 compared
with Rs. 1,02,33,309 during 1895-96, or an increase of
Rs. 5,80,533. This increase is distributed under all heads of
revenue :—Rs. 5,26,090 under excise duty ; Rs. 50,361 under sale
price, and Rs. 4,082 under miscellaneous collections, This
increase in the revenue was of course the result of a larger
quantity of salt having been disposed of, and the causes which
have led to this will be discussed further on in connection
with the subject of the sales of salt.
The total charges of the Division amounted to Rs, 3,21,732
during the past year, compared with Rs. 3,52,380 during 1895-
96, or a decrease of Rs. 30,648. This difference is explained
below.

Under fixed charges there was a decrease in expenditure
amounting to Rs, 12,534. This is arrived at as follows:—
There was an increase, (1) of Rs. 1,002 in the pay of the Assist- pistorence in fixed and
ant Commissioner owing to an officer drawing a higher salary contingent charges
having held charge of the Division during the whole of the "4
