SALT REVENUE DEPARTMENT FOR THE OFFICIAL YEAR 1896-97.
Maihar and Kutni. The total quantity of salt consigned to REVIEW BY SECTIONS.
this railway amounted during the past year to maunds 4,36,280, SAMBHAR.
compared with maunds 4,33,257, a difference of maunds 3,023.
This resulted from an improvement in the traffic of the main
line, partly counterbalanced by a decline in the trade of the
Jabbalpur Extension.
During the past year the trade of the Indian Midland Rail-
way improved by maunds 30,611. ‘The traffic of the different
sections was as follows :—

There was a falling off on the section of the line between
Jhdnsi and Itarsi, and a slight decrease on the section from
Jhansi to Manikpur; elsewhere the traffic improved, espe-
cially on the Bina-Guna branch.
The trade of the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway for the past
two years shows a small difference of maunds 1,242 in favour:
of 1896-97. Dividing the line into two sections.the following
figures appear:—
1895-96 1896-97 Difference:
: Mds, Mads. Mas,
Section of line above Lucknow including branches 6,68,306 6,72,616 + 4,310
Section of line below Lucknow with branches, ,

Total vee 928,604 9,29,846 + 1,242
The differences are not greater than such as occur in connec-
tion with ordinary trade fluctuations.
The Rohilkhand and Kumaon Railway received maunds
16,055 of salt in excess of the traffic of 1895-96. This improve-
ment was well distributed over the line. There was a falling
off of maunds 9,295 in the quantity consigned to Lakhimpur,
but this was more than counterbalanced by excesses elsewhere,
notably at Pilibhit, Hargaon and Haldwani.
The Bengal and North-Western Railway showsa decrease of
maunds 28,350 in the traffic of the past year as compared with
1895-96. The statistics of this line include the trade of the
Tirbut State Railway, and I give below separate figures of
consignments to the North-West Provinces and Oudh and to
Behar in Bengal :—
