‘itself have already been commented on. A small increase is
apparent in the weight of the consignments sent to stations
on the East Indian and the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railways,
the increase being maunds 5,412 and 5,101 respectively, It
may be thought remarkable that, remembering the high price
of Sambhar during the latter half of the year, the quantity of
rock salt sent into the North-Western Provinces and Oudh
markets did not largely increase; but the fact is well known
that the bulk of the rural population in the North-Western Pro-
vinces and Oudh does not like roek salt and will not use it,
though for the last five months of the year it was considerably
cheaper in such markets as Cawnpore, Shahjahdnpur and
Bareilly than either Sambhar, Baragara, Pachbadra, Didwana
or Sulténpuri salt. In large towns the liking for it is, how-
ever, growing by slow degrees, and in Jaunpur, Benares, Fyz-
abad and Patna it has obtained a firm hold of the markets; and
in Jaunpur and Patna particularly it soon will be, if it is not
already, the kind of salt most largely consumed. Only 88 maunds
of this salt were sent to Indian Midland Railway stations and 1,941
maunds to stations on the Bengal and North-Western Railway
last year. The total quantity sent to the North-Western Pro-
vinces and Oudh, Bengal, Rajputana and Central India is as
follows for the past six. years, these figures giving practical
proof that no advance has been made on the whole in the use
of rock salt in these areas:—
