PACHBADRA. tract of country between the Salt Source and the Rajputdna-
Malwa Railway. But it is also due to the expansion of the
areas of country served by railways, and to the steady growth
of the railway traffic in salt. Consignments of salt can be con-
veyed to markets by railway much more expeditiously and in
better condition than on pack bullocks, and under such circum-
stances it is unlikely that any improvement will occur in
‘Banjara-borne trade in the future. Banjaras will continue
to supply, for a time at least, the wilder parts of the country
remote from railway communication ; but their trade with areas
served by railways will probably decline. This is unfortu-
nate for the Banjara carrier: but the change benefits the con-
sumer, as the railway places salt in the markets cheaper and
in better condition.
As regards the distribution of Banjara-borne salt, the book-
ings to the Sirohi and Meywar States during the past year
were probably correct. The falling off in the despatches to
_Meywar appear to indicate the influence of the Chitargarh-
Udaipur Railway, over which, as I have already mentioned,
there was an increase of traffic. There Was no great difference
in the bookings to the Central Provinces and to the State of
Bhopal. It is impossible to say whether the whole of the salt
was consumed within the areas mentioned or not. Banjaras
book to distant markets, but they are always ready to dispose
of their salt on the way if it is possible to do so, and they do
‘ not hesitate to diverge from their route if they hear of favour-
able markets on either hand. It appears to me to be probable
that a good deal of the salt booked to the Central Provinces
and Bhopal was really disposed of in Meywar and in the wild
hill country south of that State.
