The additions to stock during the year under report amount-
ed to maunds 7,22,765. This quantity comprised maunds
5,19,768 of salt manufactured and stored during the year,
and maunds 2,02,997 taken credit for on account of excesses
discovered in heaps cleared by trade. The issues aggregated
maunds 6,54,102, and the year closed with a Stock balance of
maunds 3,64,292, or maunds 68,663 in excess of the balance
of the previous year. The balance of salt in hand was quite
sufficient for the needs of the trade of the Source. Toa certain
extent the production of salt at Pachbadra is indepen ient of
climatic changes, and there will be no difficulty in extracting
as much as may be required immediately after the cessation
of the monsoon rains of 1897, for, as I will show in the next
paragraph, we have a large reserve in the salt pits of the Source.
Daring the past year there was no difficulty in obtaining
as much good. salt as was required for issue. Owing to a defi-
ciency in the rainfall the salt produced was perhaps not
quite as good as the outturn of 1895-96; but still it was pure,
clean and of high quality and was much liked in the markets.
Unremitting attention has been given to the improvement of
manufacture by inducing the owners of salt pits to clean and
set them properly; and I am glad to be able tosay that the
result has been that Pachbadra salt is now of high quality
and would occupy a stronger position inthe markets if the
Source were not so distant from areas of consumption.
The result of clearance of heaps of salt sold during the gesutts of clearance of
year was as follows :— heaps,
