SALT REVENUE DEPARTMENT FOR THE OFFICIAL YEAR 1896-97.
All of the persons punished were peons. In the Upper Divi-
sion the case was one of simple theft unconnected with the work
of the Department, the peon having stolen some of the property
of a woman with whom he consorted. In'the Pachbadra Division
two peons of the Luni salt tract were punished for stealing and
selling some salt which they were appointed to guard, and
two peons were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment each for
falsely charging an Inspector under section 377 of the Indian
Penal Code.

* ualties,
One Superintendeut died during the year and one retired on
pension.
The conduct of the establishment was satisfactory.
74, I was in charge of the -Departmeut during the year,
except for a period of three months when I was on privilege
leave. During this interval, from the 23rd July to the 24th
October 1896. Mr. R. M. Dane officiated as Commissioner of
Northern India Salt Revenue. -
75. Mr. Ashton, Assistant Commissioner, officiated dur-
ing the greater part of the year as Deputy Commissioner
during Mr. Whitten’s absence on furlough, and he still holds
charge of the office. .
Mr. Ashton’s work has amply justified his selection for
this important appointment. His ability, business habits, and
thorough knowledge of the Department in all its branches,
have made him a worthy successor to Mr. Whitten, and I
cannot give him higher praise.
Mr. Lyon, as usual, managed the important Sambhar Divi-
sion with conspicuous success. Iam glad to say that the Govern-
ment of India have shown their appreciation of his merit by
obtaining the consent of Her Majesty’s Secretary of State for
India to a personal allowance of Rs. 100 per month to him.
Mr. Buckley deserves great credit for his work at Pach-
badra. It is a difficult charge and requires great tact and discre-
tion, which he has always shown.
