ADMINISTRATION
DURING THE YEAR.
REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
Mr. Bryan acted for Mr. Ashton as Assistant Commis-
sioner in charge of the Upper Division, Internal Branch.
He managed this extensive charge with ability and intelligence.
Mr. Bolster, as usual, deserves credit for the judgment and
success with which he managed the important Punjab Mines
Division.
Among Superintendents I would mention Mr. Money as
deserving of praise. He had charge of the great Khewra Mine,
and he worked zealously and intelligently during the year.
Mr. Holford was in charge of the important work of salt
manufacture at Sambhar. This is very hard work and entails
much exposure, and he deserves great credit for his zealous and
efficient superintendence. He was selected to actas Assist-
ant Commissioner for Mr. Lyon, when tke latter went on
furlough in May 1897.
Mir Nasir Ali was in charge of the Sultdnpur salt works
during the year, and displayed zeal and intelligence in the dis-
charge of his duties. I am glad to say that the Government of
India have acknowledged his long and good service in the De-
partment by granting him the title of Khan Bahadur.
The public service sustained a great loss during the year by
the death of Mr. Johnson, who had for many years managed
the Kohat salt mines with conspicuous energy and judgment.
His death was all the more sad as a recommendation had just
been sent up that his position and prospects should be much
improved when the administration of the mines should be taken
over by the Northern India Salt Revenue Department. I
concurred with the Commissioner of Peshawar and the Deputy
Commissioner of Kohat in this recommendation.
Mr. McGowan, a Superintendent in the Northern India
Salt Revenue Department, was selected as Mr. Johnson’s suc-
cessor. Mr. White-King, Deputy Commissioner of Kohat, has
informed me that he isthoroughly satisfied with Mr. McGowan’s
work, and that he considers him well suited for the appoint-
ment.
