with the very large uncleared balance of maunds 5,00;329 caused
partly by some scarcity in the wagon supply at the time, and
partly -by the traders not being anxious to receive their salt as
the markets were overstockéd from the heavy purchases of the
previous year. The uncleared balance, however, soon fell to
not unreasonable proportions ; and at the close of the year the
amount that was awaiting clearance was only maunds 85,686,
or about half the purchases made by traders during the last
month of the year. Usually a considerable quantity of the
salt shown as uncleared consists of consignments that it suits
traders to keep out of the markets for a while, and tv ensure
this they withhold the tare until they want the salt :—

39. Open wagons continued to be supplied by the railway
authorities during the year for the removal of salt from the
_lake at their discretion. No loss to the Government revenue
has occurred by their use so far, and the Assistant Commissioner
of the Division reports that whenever he was of opinion that
salt might be damaged (as, for instance, in bad weather) by the
use of uncovered stock, the railway officers have at his request
ceased to supply them. The arrangement, therefore, has worked
with complete success throughout the year 1893-94. Altogether
15,321 covered wagons and 775 uncovered wagons were supplied
during the year.
40. In connection with the through-traffic salt trade of the
division the following abstract shows the miscellaneous receipts
