Appendix III shows in full detail the sums which were
due and the disbursements which were effected. A running’
account is kept of treaty dues, and this explains the difference
of Rs. 1,91,266-7-10 between the total sum payable and that
actually paid. Arrears were drawn on. the one hand by the
Udaipur Darbar and certain persons entitled to a compassionate
allowance at the Sambhar Lake ; while on the other hand, the
full sum payable in Kohat was not drawn during the year.
8. An annual statement of account was included in the
reports of past years to show the ‘financial results of the
Sambhar Lake treaties and of the salt agreements entered into
with Native States when the other salt sources in Rajputdna
were leased and the Customs Line was abolished. No credit
was, however, taken in the account for the quantity of Bombay
salt consumed within the areas dealt with, and similarly no
debit was made of any portion of the fixed and contingent
charges of the Bombay Salt Department. The statement
therefore did not show correctly the financial result of the
abolition of the Line ; and it has accordingly been discontinued.
9. Officers of the Department were deputed at the com-
mencement of the year to inspect the closed salt works and
the salt tracts in the Native States of Dholpur, Bharatpur
Alwar, Jaipur, Kishangarh, Kotah, Bundi, Tonk, Mewar and
Shéhpura in Rajputana, and of the Bahawalpur State in the
Panjab. The open salt works at Lon Karan Sarr in the
Bikaner State were also inspected by an officer deputed for the
purpose ; and the Sargot, Kuchaman and Kachor-Rewasa salt
marshes in the neighbourhood of the S&4mbhar Lake were
visited from time to time. The conditions of the salt agree-
ments were found to be adequately observed in all of the States,
except Jaipur and Bharatpur, in which some manufacture of
earth salt was discovered. This was brought to the notice of
the Political Officers, and the offenders were duly punished.
Towards the close of the year Political Officers were consulted
as to whether salt officers might be again deputed to visit the
different States during the hot season of 1900; but their
opinion was unanimous that deputations would be inadvisable
uwing to the severe famine in Rajputana.
10. The following figures show the receipts and charges
of the Sambhar Lake. Full details of the charges are shown
