Owing to causes entirely beyond control, the operations
everywhere show a falling off as has just been explained,
but these details are in themselves quite satisfactory. . The
Calcutta refineries have given no trouble again this year.
67. The next statement shows the quantities of saltpetre
salt excised and of sitta and salt destroyed during the year
under report and three preceding years, and also shows the
quantity of salt in bond at the close of each annual period :—

The quantity of salt excised falls short of that similarly
dealt with in 1892-93 by maunds 17,504, and the quantity of sitta
destroyed is also less by maunds 24,435, for which causes have
been assigned in the foregoing paragraphs of this report. The
salt destroyed exceeds that so dealt with in the previous year
by maunds 1,240. Besides being less than usual in quantity,
the Assistant Commissioners of the Internal Branch report that
‘the quality of the salt educed was also influenced by the in-
ferior character of the crude saltpetre that was used up in re-
fineries during the year, and that it was for this reason that so
much more of the salt was destroyed as unsaleable. The salt
in bond at the close of the year was maunds 14,688, or nearly
double the quantity in bond at the close of 1892-93. In other
words, the refiners experienced more difficulty in getting rid of
their stocks of salt. The quantity of sitta that was cleared in
the Punjab on payment of a fee of eight annas per maund was
about the same as in the previous year (maunds 1,572 in
1892-93 and matinds 1,535 in 1893-94), while in the North-West-
ern Provinces and Oudh refineries the quantity increased from
maunds 713 to maunds 1,457.
