15 The number of arrests has risen from 1,440 to 1,453—an
16 increase of 13. In the Punjib Mines Division the arrests
17 were fewer by 31 (388 in 1892-93 and 357 in 1893-94) entirely
18 in the number of petty cases of passengers passing across the
19 Indus at Khairabad and Attock with small quantities of Kohat
20 salt. At the Sambhar lake there were 20 arrests in 1892-93
21 and 23 in 1893-94—an increase of 3 during the year under
22 report. At Didwana there were no cases last year against
23 9. in 1892-93. At Pachbadra there were 9 cases in
24 1892-93 and 6 in 1893-94—a decrease of 3. In the Internal
25 Branch the arrests increased from 1,014 in 1892-93 to
26 1,067 in 1893-94, an increase of 53 in the year, owing to the
27 increase in the number of crude saltpetre licenses issued ; but
28 none of these cases were of any magnitude or importance.
29 Elsewhere there were no arrests. The number of persons .
30 discharged after enquiry by the Department was 899 in 1892-93
31 and 868 in 1893-94—that is » fewer by 31. There were 44 more
32 persons sent up for trial (541 in 1892-93 and 585 in 1893-94).
33 The acquittals by Magistrates were 43 in 1892-93 and 34 in
34 1893-94, less, that is, ~ by 9 persons. The-percentage of con-
35 victions has risen from 91 99 ah 1892-93 to 9411 in 1893-94.

46 76. The statement attached tothis paragraph is an abstract
47 of the punishments awarded by the Criminal Courts, full details
48 of which are supplied in Appendix V. Comparing the figures of
49 the two years, they will be seen to be remarkably Uniform.
50 The punishments awarded vary very little from year to year,
51 and are considered adequate by myself and my divisional
52 officers :—
