3 town (the town of Jammoo), and adopted the
4 predatory habits of the peoplé. Ia a few days
5 the fame of their bravery and courage was
6 spread throughout the country. At length
7 one of the brothers settled in the fort of Mahu
8 and the other that of Jammoo. They had
9 five sons, the elder one of whom was married
10 in the family of Kirthu, the head Zamindar of
11 Samba. The second was married at Jasrota,
12 the third at Mankot, the fourth at Aknur, and
13 the fifth at Shujanpore. As avarice generally
14 follows on the heels of riches, no sooner, there-
15 fore, had they found themselves in affluent cir-
16 cumstances, than they aspired to deprive their
17 neighbours of their property. .With that view
18 one day the brother who lived at Jasrota called
19 on his brother settled at Samba. The wife of
20 the latter brother, out of modesty, shrunk
21 under the cot of her husband. As soon as the
22 two brothers joined together, they concerted
23 measures to exterminate the principal persons
24 of the village of Samba. The wife having
