3 MILITARY.
4 162. During the two years under review, namely, from the com-
5 mencement of 1854 to May 1856, little has occur-
6 red in the Military Department worthy of especial
7 notice. A few changes and improvements, however, have been quietly
8 ‘effected.
9 163. The site of the cantonment at Derah Ghazee Khan, in the
10 Cantonment of Derah Lower Derajat, has been altered. The troops
11 Ghazee Khan. have been brought together and located on the
12 North-side of the city, close to the Civil ‘station, so as to protect both
13 . effectually and command the approaches from the Hills.
14 164. A re-distribution of the Artillery of the Irregular Force has also
15 Re- distribution of Ar been made. One battery is now stationed at
16 tillery. Derah Ghazee Khan, furnishing two guns for
17 Derah Ismael Khan; one complete battery is maintained at Bunnoo,
18 and one at Kohat. Experience has shown that guns are not required
19 in the Southern Derajat. —
20 165. A considerable improvement has been made regarding the supply
21 Arrangements for car. Of carriage for the Force, Government always
22 mlage. maintained an establishment sufficient for the
23 carriage of the public stores, which would move with the troops and
24 for the private property of the men, to the extent of 15 lbs. for a sepoy
25 and an equal proportion for the non-commissioned and commissioned
26 : Native Officers. Thisis amply sufficient to meet all ordinary demands.
27 But on the occasion of a general relief, the allowance is now increased to
28 30 Ibs. and the extra carriage is hired. Thus a sufficient supply is always
29 ‘available in an emergency to move whole Regiments in the field ; while
30 on the occasion of a general relief, ample time is afforded to secure addi-
31 tional carriage.
32 166. When first the four Sikh Regiments and Punjab Trregular Force
33 Part of the Force Were raised, no portion of the former, and but one
34 armed with rifles. of the latter. corps, were armed with Rifles. But
35 as our experience of Hill warfare has extended, this weapon has been
36 Period of this Section.
