2 97. In. most parts of the Canal there is much masonry work
3 remaining, but vast quantities of bricks have been
4 collected and great progress will be made during
5 the next working season. The Canal however will not be open for
6 irrigation or navigation for three years to come, or perhaps for a longer
7 period. The cost has been as follows :—up to May 1854, Rupees 20,56,806 .
8 or £205,680; from May 1854 to May 1856, Rupees 30,36,854 or
9 £303,685—Total, Rupees 50,93,660 or £509,366, The execution of the
10 works is considered to be excellent, and the system and management of
11 “the undertaking to be highly creditable to the Officers engaged.
12 98. The old Huslee Canal running. for 110 miles near the new Canal.
13 is efficiently maintained for the present. During
14 the past two years, the receipts and expenditure

25 99. Other permanent Canals have been proposed; one from the
26 Policy of saabnc Sutlej near Roopur to irrigate a large portion of
27 permsnent Canale; the Cis-Sutlej States ; another from the Chenab to
28 run through the Rechna Doab between the Ravee and Chenab ; another
29 in the Chuch Doab between the Chenab and Jhelum. -Of these the most
30 promising is the first, namely, the Cis-Sutlej Canal from Roopur, which
31 may be beneficially undertaken as soon as funds are available. But the
32 expediency of multiplying permanent Canals of-magnitude is doubtful.
33 On the one hand the outlay is vast, on the other the return is uncertain,
34 until the means of exporting the surplus produce shall have beén provided.
35 Dnatil this cardinal and crying want, namely, means of exportation, shall
36 have been supplied, a number of great Canals would be in advance of
37 the needs of the country. Let the new Baree Doab Canal be fairly tried ;_
