6 100. The great importance of Military works in these Territories
7 Description of Military Will be perceived when it is remembered that some
8 works in the Punjab, 55,000 Regular Troops are cantoned there, among
9 which there are twelve European Regiments, with an aggregate strength
10 of 12,000, and 8,400 European Artillery. Of the chief Military-
11 stations, those of Umballa, Jullunder and Ferozepore were in a manner
12 constructed before the Annexation of the Punjab, but many of the.
13 European Barracks at those places were temporarily built at first and
14 will now have tobe re-built in a permanent style. The cantonments of
15 -Meean Meer and Sealkote were nearly completed between the year
16 1849 and thie year 1854, when the control of the works passed from the
17 Military Board to the Chief.Commissioner. Since May 1854, important
18 works have been carried on at Peshawur, Nowshera, Rawul Pindee,
19 Mooltan, the Hill stations of Kussowlie and Dugshaie, and the Sanataria
20 of Murree and Dhurmsala, At Peshawur Barracks for two Regiments of
21 European Infantry, and for two Troops and five Companies of European
22 Artillery, have been under construction: much progress has been made
23 with them ; a portion has been occupied, and the remainder will .shortly
24 be ready. At Nowshera (on the bank of the Cabul River about 30 miles
25 from Peshawur) the station has been altogether formed, and accom-
26 -modation has been provided for half the Regiment of European Infantry
27 - to be located there, one Regiment of Native Infantry, Mountain Train
28 Artillery, and one Regiment Irregular Cavalry. At Rawul Pindee Barracks
29 for one Regiment European Infantry have been constructed. At Kussowlie
30 Works executedin the: ¢forts have been- made to construct really good
31 Past two years. - Barracks for one Regiment of European Infantry,
32 and these are now nearly ready. At Dugshai Barracks have been built
33 for 200 convalescents. At Murree excellent. accommodation haa been
34 nearly completed permanently for 200 men (European Invalids) and at
