3 Company of Artillery, At Ferozepore a first class Arsenal, of a defensible
4 structure, capable of holding Magazine stores of great ‘quantities, has
5 been advanced to a forward state. A smaller building of a similar
6 kind has been erected at Jhelum. A Fort. af Attock on the Indus
7 and at Mooltan have been planned, but not yet proceeded with. The Fort
8 at Kohat has been well advanced towards completion, and other defensive
9 works on the Frontier were for the most part finished previously to May
10 1854. Besides the above principal works, there have been numberless
11 accessory works carried out in the various cantonments within the two
12 years, relating to the comfort and accommodation of the troops and to
13 the organization ‘of the various Military Departments. During the
14 Expenditure on the Year 1854-55, the expenditure on Military works
15 works. amounted to Rupees 26,00,000, and during
16 1855-56 to Rupees 30,00,000, or Rupees 56,00,000 or £560,000 for the two
17 years. It is difficult to ascertain the exact annual expenditure for the
18 previous years under the Military Board ;* but it is believed that in no
19 preceding years were greater, if so great, sums expended as in the two
20 years under review. The Punjab Administration has certainly, done its
21 utmost to promote progress in this important branch of. the Public.
22 Works Department. During the past year, indeed, a very large
23 share of the available funds has been devoted to emergent Military
24 works, ; ;
25 101.. The most important among the Military works are of course
26 those which relate to the accommodation of European troops. The
27 ’ Barracks, built after a plan approved by the late Sir Charles Napier, are
28 lofty, spacious, well ventilated’; in these respects not inferior, and per-
29 haps superior, to the Barracks of any country in the werld. Each Bar-:
30 rack accommodating a Company (say 100 men) is about-320 feet long,
31 48 feet broad, 21 feet high ; so that there is an ample allowance of 2,000,
32 or 2,500 cubic feet of air to each man. There is one main apartment in
33 Excellence of the Which the men live and sleep, and side rooms in
34 Barracks for European which they mess. Every practicable arrangement
35 troops.
36 is made to mitigate the heat of summer by means
37 of pendant fans and mats of wetted grass. In the Hospitals there
38 would generally be the same number of cubic feet p& man, if there
