2 increase of tribute. The resumption of Shoojanpoor
3 from BooDii Singh Biiugut was the only operation of
4 that kind effected on this occasion. Returning- to Lahor
5 on the 23d of May, Runjeet Singh received intelli-
6 gence there of the success ofKnuRUK Singh against
7 Bhimbur, Jummoo and Ukhnoor. The Koonwur was
8 honored with a grant of these places in Jageer, and he
9 placed them in the management of Bpi YE Ram Singh.
10 DuL Singh had also succeeded in extorting a consider-
11 able sum from Mozuffur Khan of Mooltan.
12 In August of the same year, Jymul Singh, the
13 father-in-law of KiiURUK Singh, died suddenly, and it
14 was generally believed, that his death was occasioned by
15 poison administered by his wife. Runjeet Singh
16 constituted himself the heir to all the treasure, accumu-
17 lated by this chief during a long life of parsimony and
18 usurious dealing. Much of his wealth was, at the time of
19 his decease, out at interest with Muhajuns of Umritsur,
20 all of whom were called upon to account with the Lahor
21 treasury. In the following month the families of the two
22 ex-Shahs of Kabool, i. e. of SiiAii ZuMAN and of Shah
23 Shooja sought an asylum at Lahor. The latter chief
24 Lad added largely to his experience of adversity. After
25 escaping from the unfortunate cnterprize, he had under-
26 taken in September preceding, his person was seized by
27 Juhan Dad Khan, the Governor of Attuk, by whom
28 lie was sent to his brother Ata Mohummud of Kash-
29 meer, who held him a close prisoner. The helpless
30 Shaii Zuman brought both families to the Sikh capital,
31 where RuNJEET SiNOH professed much interest in
32 the misfortunes and fate of Shah Shooja, and seemed
