2 tion attacked its parties, and cut oif all stragglers ; and
3 the camp was kept during the night continually on the
4 alert by their daring skirmishes.
5 In April, Runjeet Singh secured the submission of
6 Tar Mohummud Khan, who came with some fine
7 horses, including the far-famed Kuhar, and with a request
8 to be allowed to hold Peshawur as a tributary of Labor,
9 The Sikh was well content to make a settlement for the
10 city and surrounding territory on this basis. Having
11 effected it, he returned to his capital in person on the
12 26th April.
13 Mohummud Uzeem Khan died in the following
14 month, and the event contributed to produce further con-
15 fusion in the affairs of Afghanistan ; for while he lived,
16 he was looked upon as the head of the family in succes-
17 sion to FuTEH Khan, whereas after his death the
18 numerous brothers and nephews of that chief acknow-
19 ledged nobody, and their quarrels and contentions covered
20 with outrage and disturbance, all the fairest portion of
21 the Afghan territory. Muhmood and his son Kamran
22 were confined to the fort and city of Herat, beyond
23 which their name was no where respected, nor could they
24 exercise any authority.
25 After the Dusserah, in October, the Sikh army being
26 again called out, was led by Runjeet Singh down the
27 Indus, with the professed design of an attack upon
28 Siudh. The river was crossed in November, and the
29 whole of that month was occupied in reducing Bhutec
30 villages, and exacting contributions from the Balooch
31 and other Jageerdars, whose possessions lay on the
