The total number of Sleepers actually delivered during the year
1871-72 was therefore 272,381.
5. According to the Conservator’s accounts, there are 248,000
en Per tre ne eee Deodar Sleepers sawn in the Jounsar Forest
120,000 in Mundhole ” Division; logs ready for 313,000 Sleepers
more in the Bhageruttce Division ; besides 21,500 Sal Sleepers in the
Kumaon Division, the latter-of which have already been accepted by
an Officer of the Rajpootana State Railway. The Conservator, who,
from the indents he has received, is fully aware of the total number of
Sleepers likely to be required for the State Railways, should be careful
that the Forests are not uselessly denuded of timber in excess of actual
requirements.
6. 24,700 Sl Sleepers were prepared for the Oudh and Rohilkhund
Railway in the Gurhwal Division during the past year; they were
inspected by an officer of that Company, and nearly 24,000 accepted by
him as first-class. This result is satisfactory, but the Lieutenant-Gover-
nor would have been glad had the Conservator mentioned in his report
the price paid, or agreed to be paid, by the Company for each accepted
Sleeper or cubic foot of timber. It should also have been stated if any-
thing had been paid to account, and if so, how much, during the year
under report.
A similar omission is made in the report on the sale of 500 logs of
Sal timber to the same Railway Company from the Kumaon Division.
7. Timber in stock.—The value of timber in stock on the 3lst
March, 1872, is estimated by Conservator at Rs. 2,68,619, showing, there-
fore, an excess over the previous year of Rs. 73,457. The following table
shows that there has been a steady increase year by year to the timher

four-fold.
8. As the Lieutenant-Governor is aware that exertions have been
made during the current year to dispose of the surplus stock, it is only
necessary to desire the Conservator’s continued attention to the desir-
ableness of reducing stocks of timber other than that cut to order for
Railway purposes.
— 9. Timber sales —The value of timber sold during the vear (leav-
ing out the amount realised for Sleepers) was Rs. 74,004, or Rs. 3,973 in
excess of 1870-71. Satisfactory arrangements have been made for
more extensive sales during the current year, and advantage will be taken
of any rise in the price of timber on the plains, by competing with timber
