mated income was Rs. 52,000, and the estimated expenditure Rs. 38,126,
the actuals having increased to Rs. 96,819 and Rs. 58,577 respectively.

15. The expenditure under the sub-heads of “Executive Officers”
and “Survey” has not been shown separately in the Conservator’s
account current (page 22A.), but was (it is presumed ) sub-divided over the
several] forest divisions. To this procedure must be attributed, there-
fore, the excess expenditure shown in some of the divisions.
16. Conservancy, Jungle fires, &c.—It is observed that, with the
exception of Goruckpore, the operations fer the precautions for the pre-
vention of fires were generally successful throughout the forests in these
Provinces. His Honor is prepared to admit in the forthcoming budget,
for the reasons given in paragraphs 20 and 24 of Conservator’s report,
any reasonable amount proposed to be spent for fire conservancy, and for
the clearing of creepers in the forests of the Goruckpore Division.
17. The Lieutenant-Governor will await a report on the result of
increasing the area open for export of dry timber in the Kumaon and
Gurhwal Forests (paragraph 21 of Conservator’s report).
18. Plantations—The Lieutenant-Governor has perused with great
interest Mr. Craw’s report on the result of last year’s operations at
Raneekhet, and he congratulates that officer on the success which has
attended them. The arrangements under which 115 acres of the Troup
Estate and 30 acres of a ravine in cantonments were converted into
nurseries for the growth of fruit, Australian and indigenous forest trees,
are very satisfactory. His Honor considers that so long as workpeople are
employed in large numbers about the cantonments, the proposal of Mr.
Craw to plant young trees in cantonments instead of seeds should be
adopted.
