19. It is observed that the experiments made in transplanting gum-
tree seedlings from the Ranechhet nursery to Mohan, on the Kosi River,
12 miles north of Ramnugegur, were at first successful, and the Lieutenant-
Governor will be glad to hear, in due course, the eventual result of these
plantings. It is with regret that His Honor notices that the experiment
of growing gum-trees at Chukrata, which gave such promise, has entirely
failed.
20. The result of the experimental sowings of deodar and cheel
proposed for the forests near Chukrata, and of teak for those in the
Goruckpore District, is awaited.
21. Boundaries.—The result of last year’s operations is a9 satisfac-
tory as could be expected under the constant change of officers. The
boundaries of the Doon have been nearly laid down, and it is to be hoped
that, during the ensuing cold season, the Settlement Officer of the Doon
may he able to settle all disputes, and that permanent boundary marks or
pillars may be constructed, and a correct and authenticated map of the
Doon Forests, laying down correctly all forest boundaries, may be com-
pleted. Ina special application and in paragraph 68 of his report the
Conservator asks for the above purpose for the services of a Revenue
Survey party, and the matter has been submitted to the Government of
India for consideration.
22. Maps and Registers.—The Lieutenant-Governor regrets that
nothing has yet been done in the preparation of maps and registers of
the reserved or State Forests in these Provinces, and [is Honor hopes
to hear from the Conservator that these important papers are in fair pro-
gress during the current year.
23. Roads and Bridges—Four roads and two bridges were con-
structed during the year, and the Bhageruttee Valley Road completed and
widened The “Rani Taht Road” and the “Tonse Valley Footpath” are
the only two major works: the first is 5 miles long, and connects the
forest of Rani Taht with Chukrata; the last is 55 miles long, and con-
nects Kalsi in the Doon with the Tewnt suspension bridge over the
Tonse, on the Mussoorie and Simla Road. These two roads were con-
structed at a cost of Rs. 5,000 each.
24. Breaches of Forest Rules, Frauds, &c.—They call for no special
remark, as all those reported on by Conservator are of a minor nature.
In the Doon, a good deal of roguery has been stopped by the ener-
getic action of Dr. King and of his successor, Captain Bailey, R.E. The
latter officer reports having obtained a conviction against a patrol for
“levying toll on his own account,” and that a similar charge against
another is under investigation.
25. General Remarks.—The Lieutenant-Governor approves provi-
sionally, and subject to further report, of the orders issued by the Conser-
vator in respect of closing the sil forests in the Doon, and Captain Bailey-s
observations will he communicated to the Irrigation Branch. The cutting
of the green sil under the present condition of the forests should cer-
tainly be stopped at once.
