PROGRESS REPORT
FOREST ADMINISTRATION
PROVINCE OF MYSORE,
1871—72.
By CAPTAIN G. J. van SOMEREN,
CONSEBRVATOR OF FORESTS.
REVIEW BY THE CHIEF COMMISSIONER.
The Progress Report has been drawn up by the Conservator, Captain yan Somercn,
and its several headings will be tollowed in these remarks.
INTRODUCTORY.
2, Revisod rules for the sale of sandalwood by auction were published and
brought into operation during the year.
SPECIAL.
HEAD 1.—STATE FORESTS.
FIRST SECTION.
3. Nonew State Forests were established during the year ; but additions were
made to two ofthe existing forests to the extent of 40,120 acres, or about 622 squaro
miles; making the total area of the State Forests at the close of the year about 4513
sijuare miles, of which 4063 consisted of deciduous, and 45 of evergreen forests,
4. ‘The demarcations of the former class of forests up to the close of the year, com-
prised 3093 square miley, of which those of about 623 square miles were carried out
during the ycar.
5. The necessary inspections and arrangements connected with the taking up of
large tracts of land for fuel reserves in the Nandidroog Range, and for District Forests
in the Hassan District, interfered with the further extension of the State Forests in those
ranges; and the Conservator remarks that the District Forest scheme, if properly carried
out, will probably sufficiently provide for the due preservation of the existing forests,
not already set apart as “State Forests,” and render further extension of the latter, un-
necessary, while some of the tracts proposed to be included among the forests, will pro-
bably be worked under the District Forest scheme.
SECOND SECTION.
6. No remarks,
