This serious falling-off is ascribed by the Conservator to the want of a proper sandal-
k6ti, which has necessitated the sale of the wood collected from timo {o time, instead of
poriodically. As, however, it is presumed that the same course must have becn adopted
in the previous year when good prices were obtained, indeed the highest in the Province,
this explanation appears to be hardly sufficient. The facilities afforded to purchasers of
this article at Bangalore were described in the Report for 1870-71 as the cause of the
high prices obtained there; and, with proper arrangements, these advantages should, it
inay be supposed, have ensured a more favorable result as regards the last year’s sales.
The necessary steps will be taken without delay for the provision of a suitable building
for the purpose.
14, The quantity of inferior and waste-wood included in the sandal-collections of
last year, appears to have been very much larger than usual, and to call for some notice.
DISTRICT FORESTS.
15. The scheme for placing the more important of the District Forests throughout
the Province under the control and management of the Forest Department, referred to in
para 21 of the Review of the Report of 1870-71, was sanctioned by the Government of
India at the close of the year under report, and is now being brought into operation. If
properly carried out the scheme can hardly fail to prove successful ; but it will take
some time bofore it can be generally worked.
The largo area of 35,525 acres of suitable land for this purpose, was reserved there-
for in the Sorabs Tulook, on its settlement last year.
