The operations of the year thus shew anet profit of Rs. 1,24,036; the surplus
receipts in cash being Rs. 1,59,531. The value of wood supplied to the Maharaja
during the year, was Rs, 8,431—5—7, which atmount is not included in the cash-surplus,
17. The amount shewn above as the value of assets at the commencement of the
year under report, does not correspond with that exhibited in the Report for 1870—7],
as existing at the close of that year. The difference, amounting to the large sum of Rs.
82,344, is stated by the Conservator in a separate letter, No. 956, dated Ist August 1872,
to be due to an error in the valuation of sandalwood stock, as it stood at the close of
1870—7 1, the valuation shewn in the accounts for that year having been put down at
Rs, 1,12,768, whereas it was really only Rs. 80,424; thus reducing the net-revenue for
that year, from Rs. 2,58,937 to Rs. 2,26,593.
The subject will bo soparately reported on; but it may be noticed bere that the
error occurred from an over-estimate of the sandalwood in store, the quantity being
entered as 400 tons and charged accordingly ; whereas it was only 306 tons, of which
60} tons were inferior, or waste.
The error merely affects the oporations of the last year, so far as it led to the incor-
rect valuation of the assets at its commencement; but it has been duly amended in
the accounts furnished with the report undor review.
18 In paras 51 to 62 of his Report, the Conservator gives full details of the
actuals for the year, under the several sub-heads of receipt and expenditure, as com-
pared with the Budget allotments ; from which it appears that the aggregato actuals
were—
Receipts Rs. 3,18,634, against the Budget estimate of Ra 3,14,000 ; and—
Expenditure Rs, 1,59,103, against the Budget estimate of Ry. 1,86,600,
19, The total estimated value of the timber in store at the ‘commencement of the
year was Rs. 1,15,603; and of that felled or collected during the year, Rs. 54,721. The
amount realized from sales was only Rs. 50,408, against Ks, 1,21,100, estimated in the
Budget. In the Ashtagram Range, the sales realized Its, 16,500 less than was antici-
pated, owing chiefly, it 15 stated, to the quantity of timber imported into Mysore from
the adjoining Madras State and private forests.
20. The total collections of sandalwood during the year aggregated 653 tons of
good wood, or 153 tons in excess of the quantity (500 tons) fixed by the Government of
India as the maximum annual collection for the present. Tho Conservator states that
the excess was due to the collection of old wood; but care must be taken so to arrange
that the entire quantity of good wood, however obtained, collected in any one year, shall
not exceed the limit of 500 tons ordered by Government.
The total quantity of sandalwood sold during the year, excluding the waste, was
740 tons ; the realizations from which were Rs. 78,640 in excess of the Budget estimate.
Had it not been for the large excess under this head, the serious falling off in the
sales of timber, amounting to Rs. 69,700, would have reduced the receipts considerably
below the sum anticipated in the Budget, instead of which they exceeded the latter by
Rs. 4,634.
21. The realizations from the sale of minor forest’ produce were only Rs. 2,591,
against Rs. 10,000 estimated in the Budget. The reason assigned for this large falling
oft under this head, is not satisfactory, and demands close enquiry. ‘The decrease occur-
red chiefly in the Ashtagram Range.
