36. The plantation at Rungbool is reported to have been increased
by 60 to 70 acres during the year; that is to
say, that from 60 to 70 acres of land, which had
been cleared formerly, was planted out with Magnolia seedlings from a nursery
that had been prepared near the spot to fill up vacancies in the old plantation.
Rungbool plantation.
37. The Conservator did not consider it any use to fill up the vacancies
in the old plantation, and desired the Assistant Conservator, as the plants
were ready in the nurscrics, and the expense of clearing the ground had during
a former year been incurred, to plant up the cleared space.
38. This plantation has not been visited by the Conservator during the
past year, but it was reported on by Dr. King under instructions given by the
Bengal Government. Tho report does not speak favorably of the plantation,
and it will not be further increased, nor will any further expense be incurred
uponit. It will simply be protected from injury, and will from time to time be
planted up, where vacant, with such Pines and other young trees as the
Cinchona Department may have ready for the purpose. The Government of
Bengal have issued instructions for the formation of nurseries for various kind of
British and foreign trees which are tu be tried in the hulls
39. In addition to the Rungbool plantation another, on the Mahaldaram,
‘at ** Dhoobee Jhora,” was discovered this season by
Mr. James, tho Assistant Conservator, on the report of
a man formerly may eh in the department. How it has happened to be over-
looked, it is difficult to say. On this matter Mr. Mann, on his return from Europe,
will be able to give explanation, as ho planted it. The trees are probably the
produce of some of the secds sent out by the Secretary of State in 1863,
and were probably transplanted in 1866. After visiting this plantation in
December the Consorvator gave orders to have the plants cleared, and the
following is the result as givon by the Assistant Conservator after clearing
the trees. The plants are believed to be of the following three kinds :—
Juniperus Virginiana, Juniperus Uunorphus, Cypressus Torulosa.
Dhoobeo Jhora plantation.

from 20 to 25 feet ; at what intervals originally planted, is not known.
