44. During the year nine acres were added to the Teak plantation at Ba-
mun Pokree ; the plants were taken from nurseries.
The nursery had not been very judiciously chosen,
and the seeds did not germinate frecly the first year; but thoy are now coming
up in considerable numbers. This is often the case with Teak, as the nut is
very hard, and frequently does not come up until the second year. Dr. King
reports these transplants in December as doing well; but when the plantation
was visited by the Conservator soon’ afterwards, he did not form this opinion of
them, as the plants showed the sign which all Teak exhibit when they have been
transplanted too late,—their leading shoots were mostly injured, and the leaves
small and in clusters, instead of being large and at regular intervals. Tho
dee trees on the original plantation are, as the report states, models of
calth. There is irregularity in the growth arising from some of the plants
having been put out into vacancies subsequently to the formation of the plan-
tation. Some doubts exist as to whether the original plants are from sceds sown
in situ or transplants from seed beds. The question is one of some impor-
tance, as opinion is divided as to whether it is best to sow Teak where tho tree is
intended to grow, or to transplant it from a nursery. On the return from leave
of Mr. Mann, who directed the operations, the doubt will be settled. This
plantation now covers an area of about 14 acres. It has lately been put in
charge of the Cinchona Department, as the services of a trained gardener to
superintend the planting have not been obtainable, and success and economy
cannot be sccured under local officers entirely untrained to the work.

45. Between 60 to 70 acres were cleared and prepared for planting this
season before the plantation was taken charge of by the cirfthona establishment.
Ample supplies of seed have been obtained from Burmah to stock the ground,
and no doubt under the care and experience of skilled labour the plantation will
steadily extend and become of importance.
46. A new experimental Teak plantation at Fallacotta, Western Dooars, is
New plantation near Fallacotta, B. being commenced tlis scason with the sanction of
Doors. Government.
47. A small plantation of India-rubber, on a spot selected near Sivoke, is
being formed this season. ‘The expense will be
trifling, and it seems of some importance to test the
growth of the tree from cuttings and the expense attending the work without
loss of time.
