but it is reported to contain every variety of timber common to the Central
Provinces, with a luxuriant growth of bambaos. It seems probable that this
tract will eventually supply a considerable quantity of material to the large
town of Hinganghat, with which it is connected by the Southern Road.
“This tract is situated on the banks of the Wainganga River, about 20
miles to the north of Burha, the head-quarters of
Balaghat. It was found to contain a most promis-
ing natural growth of youny teak and also of Katang bamboos. To render
the reserve compact, 600 acres of Jand which belonged to private individuals
have been taken up and included. The former owners have been compensated,
artly by a money payment of Rs. 325, and partly by a grant of other land
eke up the river. Referring to the situation of this tract and the natural
growth it contains, Mr. Jacob, after a careful examination, writes as follows :—
«<«T feel no hesitation in according to this tract, area for area, a higher
value than any other State forest we now have in the Provinces.’
‘It is to Captain Bloomfield, the Deputy Commissioner of Balagh&t that
Government is indebted for bringing to light the value and importance of this
tract.
‘In 1870-71 attention was drawn to the injury done in the forests of the
he enna as Sagar District by indiscriminate felling, and in the
kurscva ~Ss«éSMee year Mr. Strettell, Deputy Conservator, was
deputed to cxamine these tracts and devise a scheme
for the remedy of the evil above-mentioned. On Mr. Strettell’s proposals,
the Chief Commissipner was pleased to direct that the Ranipura, Rangir, and
Huthku tracts should be reserved, with the view of securing a supply of fuel
and small building material proportionate to the demand.” ‘

9. In Borar, there has becn an apparent diminution in the
area of the Reserved Forests, owing to the abandonment of the
Katkali tract in the Muailghdit. It has now been decided to leave
this area as it stands, and to work it on the system sanctioned
by the Resident for unreserved forests. The Katkali tract was
found on inspection ¢o have been overworked, and to contain
little or no well-grown timber; whilst. the unreserved section of the
Mailghit was much more in need of being enlarged than the
reserved portion, which alroeady comprised 400 square miles, the
area considered neecssary by Dr. Brandis to provide for the wants
of the greater part of the Purna valley.
