to the deputation of clerical establishment on account of the in-
creased work in the Assistant Commissioner’s Office ; decrease
of Rs. 769 in the salaries of Superintendents and Assistant
Superintendents owing to transfer during the year of officers of
lower grades according to the exigencies of the service ; in-
crease of Rs. 920 in the salaries of Inspectors-and petty officers
caused by transfers to the source necessitated by the increase of
work; decrease of Rs. 615 in the pay of servants and guards
owing to vacancies being left unfilled in the Luni tract estab-
lishment during the winter and rains; and a decrease of Rs. 60
in the cost of the Medical establishment. Rs. 753 were paid as
exchange compensation allowance during the year. In contin-
gent charges there is an increase for the year of Rs. 51,706, the
amounts expended being Rs. 27,109 in 1892-93 and Rs. 78,815
in 1893-94. The two items which almost entirely account for
the increased expenditure are manufacture of salt (Rs. 16,150 in
1892-93 and Rs. 46,749 in 1893-94) and through-traffic charges
(Rs, 4,014 in 1892-93 and Rs. 23,124 in 1893-94). The quantity of
salt purchased and paid for during the year was maunds 7,65,421
against only maunds 1,15,389 in the year before, and the quan-
tity of salt sold under the through-traffic system was maunds
8,30,068 against maunds 1,75,683 in 1892-93. Other contin-
gent items show the following differences:—Travelling allow-
ance, decrease Rs. 340 owing to the removal of a Superintendent
from the charge of the Luni salt tract which is now in the
charge of an -Inspector; conveyance of tents and records, in-
crease Rs. 78 owing to the Assistant Commissioner having
toured in the Luni tract during the year; purchase and
repairs of tents, increase Rs. 31; and hot weather charges, in-
crease Rs. 19; service postage charges, increase Rs. 55 owing
to the increased trade of the division; telegram charges, de-
crease Rs. 7; and stationery charges, increase Rs. 10; rewards
for seizures, decrease Rs. 110, as fewer important seizures were
made in 1893-94; miscellaneous charges, increase Rs. 14¢
owing mainly to increased charges for remittance of treasure
within the district; petty construction and repairs of roads
and buildings, increase Rs. 1,206 owing to the cost of the large
repairs necessary after the heavy rains of 1893.

This statement shows the great increase which has occur-
red in the through-traffic and ordinary rail-borne trade owing
to the exhaustion of stocks at Sambhar, the failure of manu-
facture there in 1892-93, and the increase in the selling price
of Sambhar from 2% to 8 annas per maund. The through-
traffic sales increased from maunds 1,75,683 to maunds 8,30,068,
